Hebrew University’s Botanical Garden: a Source in Scientific Knowledge Creation in Mandatory Palestine

This primary source commentary analyzes a letter (dated 28 July 1929) sent by Alexander Eig, botanist and custodian of The Hebrew University Jerusalem’s herbarium, to Judah Magnes, chancellor later first president University. letter, which discusses the creation botanical garden connected university, shows how emerging Jewish community botanists at newly established was carving out space for itself in international experts. Moreover, exemplifies importance people’s mobility creating knowledge, as well movement plants, seeds, other specimens, highlights interaction between scientific institutions an important aspect nation-building. Mandatory Palestine’s position “Holy Land,” its location across Middle Eastern Mediterranean environmental spaces, made Jerusalem unique attractive center knowledge creation, recognized early on question.
